Professional Development in George Green's School

All stakeholders at George Green's School are included our training plan. As an Investors in People organisation we value our staff and regard professional development as an entitlement for all.

Scheduled meetings will focus on improving learning and teaching; on assessment and moderation; on raising standards and meeting the needs of our pupils. The key to the success of these training opportunities is the measurable impact they have on pupils' learning. Sharing good practice within teams and amongst teams is one of the best forms of training and development. In addition, we have a team of expert practitioners who are able to offer coaching to colleagues to support them in improving the learning experience and outcomes for learners at the school.

We have now come to the understanding that professional development is not just about courses and external INSET. Instead, we can identify a huge variety of in-house development opportunities for staff at all levels. For instance, shadowing staff in positions we aspire to in our school or in other schools, is a very useful way of establishing which direction our career paths will take. Similarly, an opportunity to take responsibility for whole school or faculty/department/year or team projects allows staff to gain valuable experience to move to the next stage of their career.

Newly Qualified Teachers

Our Newly Qualified Teachers join us in July and we put together a training programme for them before they start teaching in September. This has proved to be very successful, providing our Newly Qualified Teachers with an insight into the school and ensures they receive a rigorous induction into George Green's School. NQTs will also follow a programme of induction sessions throughout the year delivered by experienced, expert practitioners. We allocate all NQTs both a, professional and subject mentor, with whom they will have regular, timetabled meetings to support them through the induction year.
