Standards of achievement for pupils of all abilities are steadily rising. We spend many hours planning and reviewing schemes of work and individual lesson plans to ensure that lessons are well differentiated to meet the needs of all. The curriculum is reviewed on an annual basis to make sure it offers the best choice for all. Full details are contained in the information sheets at the back. There are a variety of different pathways to suit the ability and interest of individuals. We set challenging targets for all pupils and report on their progress three times a year.
In addition, there are three Progress Review Days - one each term. During these meetings, pupils and parents meet the student's tutor, discuss their progress and set themselves targets for the term ahead.
All this, combined with homework, helps us to support our pupils and to help them achieve their full potential. In addition, study support and a wide range of extra-curricular activities add value to the progress already made. Additional support and guidance is provided for those with special educational needs together with those who are more able and talented. The school became a Humanities Specialist School in September 2006.
Thus specialism has helped us to develop all pupils in every part of the curriculum. We focus on English, and pay particular attention to Language and Literacy, Citizenship and Drama.
Pupils at all levels need to develop their language skills and we are passionate about developing our young people as citizens within their community. Drama is very successful in the school and we want to spread the techniques used within that subject to other areas of the curriculum.
Our greatest challenge now is to develop our pupils as independent learners who will not be afraid to take risks.
