Language and Literacy
At George Green’s, we believe that excellent reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are vital to the success of all students, not only during their time with us but to secure a prosperous future. As a school, we firmly believe that all teachers are teachers of literacy sharing a common goal and responsibility to ensure all students are supported and guided, challenged and developed from the moment they step through the door right up until the moment they open their results.
With regards to literacy and language, there are two main branches of support: Literacy across the Curriculum and Special Educational Needs. These two branches work collaboratively to meet the diverse needs of students across the curriculum at George Green’s.
The Literacy across the Curriculum team is lead by three specialists, all teachers within the English Faculty. The main aim of this team is to deploy their expertise in developing teachers across the school in integrating literacy seamlessly within their planning and the subsequent delivery in lessons within their specific subject area.
This team also guides and supports all learners who have English as an additional language; ensuring that these students are fully supported in the acquisition of English as an additional language and guided throughout key aspects of school life throughout their time at the school until they are confident and independent learners. The team delivers bespoke training to classroom teachers to provide them with a range of specific strategies within their toolkit to best ensure attainment and achievement for all students with EAL.
Working closely with our feeder primary schools and focussing on the importance of a smooth and purposeful transition between KS2 and KS3, the needs of all our Year 7 students are closely monitor and assess. In relation to language and literacy, all new students sit two reading tests at the beginning of the school year to establish the individual literary needs and requirement of each student and put in place measures to secure the expected levels of progress. Key measures include placing all students with a reading level below national average on an intensive phonics based intervention programme: ReadWrite Inc (a widely regarded programme used in both primary and secondary school) run by the Special Educational Needs faculty, who carefully monitoring and assess the progress of these students each half term.
In addition to the work that goes on inside the classroom, staff work collaboratively across the school to offer a exciting and enriching diet of literacy and language based activities and events all students to get involved in, projects; these include: Who I Am? Day, ‘BBC News Report’, ‘First Story’: a national creative writing programme which sees students work alongside a professional writer, World Book Day, the Jack Petchey’s ‘Speak Out’ Challenge and the Tower Hamlets EBP Public Speaking competition as well as the school's very own student run newspaper, The Green Scene.
