Year 11 Parents All Parents except Year 11

 28th September 2020

Dear parents and carers,

Many of you will heard the exciting news last week that George Green’s School is to have a new building. It reflects the enormous improvements that this school has made over the past few years and we were delighted by the praise lavished on us by the Mayor and local councillors during the announcement. We are also over the moon that we are to get a new building on our existing site. It is no less than this community deserves.

There has been some unhelpful and inaccurate speculation on social media about what might happen to students during the construction of the new building. I can assure parents that it will be an absolute priority that disruption to students will be kept to a minimum. I am meeting with the local authority regularly and I will keep you informed about progress.

In the meantime, we continue to manage the impact of Covid-19 on the running of the school. I am pleased to say that our systems for keeping everyone in school as safe as possible from the virus continue to work very well. We did have to send a year group home last week, but because we have kept students apart in their bubbles, other year groups could continue to attend as normal.

Year 11 will return to school on Friday 2nd October. They will follow their normal timetable this week, but will work from home on Teams. Learning resources can be accessed here, including a video by Mr Cullenbrooke on how to access Teams.

We have noticed that absence rates have begun to increase over the past week. Some parents seem to be a little confused by some of the rules about self-isolation. Please use the following advice to help inform your decision about when to self-isolate:

The symptoms of Covid-19 for which you should self-isolate are:

  • A new and persistent cough
  • A fever
  • A loss of taste of smell
  • If you, your child or a member of your household have a runny nose or a sore throat WITHOUT these symptoms, you DO NOT need to self-isolate
  • If you, your child or anyone in your household has been directed to self-isolate because of a close contact with someone who has Covid-19 (for example, you have been rung up by the NHS track and trace service) it is ONLY the person who has been a close contact who needs to self-isolate; the rest of the household does NOT need to self-isolate unless they have been instructed to do so
  • There are only a very tiny number of people in the country who are shielding; the school has been informed of all children at George Green’s who need to shield. Unless your child has been specifically directed to shield by the NHS and you have written evidence to support this, your child should be in school
  • If you, your child or anyone in your household has the symptoms of Covid-19 then you should book a test for the person with symptoms. If you cannot get a test straight away, please keep trying. Tests can be booked here. Only people with the three symptoms of Covid-19 (above) should book at test

If your child is absent from school through self-isolation and if they are well enough work, then they should do so. Work packs and other useful resources can be found here. If there are issues accessing work, please contact the attendance team.

Please ring and speak to the attendance team if you need advice on anything relating to Covid-19 and school attendance.

Best wishes,

Jon Ryder

Changes to routines

To keep all member of the school community safe, parents should be aware of the following changes to routines:

  • Students must arrive at school from 8.40am; no students will be allowed into the building before 8.40am
  • Students will enter and exit the building through designated entrances/exits
  • Students will attend school in year group bubbles; they will be allocated to year group zones in the building and teachers will come to them rather than students moving around the building
  • Seating will be arranged in classrooms so that all students are facing forwards or away from each other
  • Where it is necessary for a change of classroom or teacher, students will be supervised by staff; in Key Stage 3, students will line up outside between each lesson before being taken back into the building
  • Break times and lunchtimes will be staggered to minimise the number of students in dining rooms; students will only be allowed to mix with young people in their year group
  • Students in Key Stage 3 and 4 will be given badges to wear on their blazers; these will be used by staff to identify which year group a student is in and to help avoid any issues with mixing outside of bubbles
  • At the start of each lesson students will be directed by their teacher to sanitise their desk using antibacterial spray; students will also be directed to sanitise their hands
  • Students will be instructed to put on a face covering before leaving lessons, in line up and when entering the building at the start of the day
  • Students must use hand sanitiser before and after using the finger print reader in the dining halls
  • Public transport should not be used unless students live too far from school to walk. If parents choose to allow their children to use public transport, then they should provide them with a face covering
  • Communal prayer will not be possible, as it will require students from different year groups to mix together; alternatives will be investigated in the first few weeks of term

Changes to Code of Conduct

We have the highest expectations of students’ behaviour. We recognise that changes to routines will be difficult at times and we will support all our young people in adapting to them successfully. Listed below are changes to our Code of Conduct to support reopening. All our rules are designed to keep students, staff and the whole community as safe as possible. Breaches of our Code of Conduct could result in sanctions, including detentions, internal exclusion and external exclusion. All our existing rules as set out in our Code of Conduct still apply. Full school uniform must be worn at all times.

  • Students must stay in their year group bubble at all times when in school, including at break times and lunch times
  • Students should not touch each other
  • Students in Key Stage 3 and 4 must wear their year group badge at all times; swapping or exchanging badges will result in serious sanction
  • Students must comply with high standards of hygiene (e.g. catch it, bin it, kill it) and follow the instructions of staff around this; spitting is strictly forbidden, including when participating in sport
  • Covid-19 is a serious health issue and students must not use it in banter or name-calling
  • It is a legal requirement that face coverings are worn on public transport and in shops; students in uniform NOT wearing face coverings when they should be will receive a school sanction for bringing the school into disrepute
