School re-opening

Returning to School in March 2021 Factsheet

George Green’s School will be reopening to all students from March 8th 2021. The government has published detailed guidance on how schools can run safely. Information for parents can be found on www.gov.uk or by clicking on this link.

Keeping the community safe

To help us to reopen safely, we will be adopting the following principles to help prevent the spread of Covid-19:

  1. Staff or students showing the symptoms of Covid-19 must stay at home and arrange a Covid-19 test as soon as possible. If it is negative they can return to school; if it is positive, they must self-isolate for 10 days from the first day they showed symptoms
  2. Face coverings must be worn inside the building at all times, including in classrooms and on corridors and all communal spaces
  3. Staff and students must wash or sanitise their hands often; hand sanitiser is available in all classrooms, in the dining halls and on corridors
  4. Coughs and sneezes must be caught in a tissue and the tissue disposed of safely (catch it, bin it, kill it); tissues and lidded bins will be placed in every classroom
  5. There will be increased cleaning of the building and cleaning products will be available to staff and students in every classroom
  6. Students will attend school in year group bubbles to help with social distancing; staff will maintain 2m social distancing from students and other members of staff where this is possible. Where social distancing is not possible for an extended period of time, personal protective equipment must be worn; this will be provided by the school
  7. All in door spaces will be kept as well ventilated as possible. This will include keeping classroom doors and windows open at all times

As a further way of controlling the spread of the virus, we have been directed by government to offer regular rapid testing onsite. More details about this are below.

In the event of a positive Covid-19 test, we will work with local health protection teams to decide on the appropriate course of action.

The school day

The school day will be managed in exactly the same way as it has been all year. In brief:

  • Students must arrive at school from 8.40am; no students will be allowed into the building before 8.40am
  • Students will enter and exit the building through the designated entrances/exits they have been using since September
  • Students will attend school in their normal year group bubbles and lessons will take place in normal year group zones
  • Break times and lunchtimes will be staggered to minimise the number of students in dining rooms; students will only be allowed to mix with young people in their year group
  • Students in Key Stage 3 and 4 have been given badges to wear on their blazers; these are used by staff to identify which year group a student is in and to help avoid any issues with mixing outside of bubbles

All the changes we made to our Code of Conduct in response to Covid remain the same.

Plans for week commencing 8th March

  • We will be delivering rapid Covid testing to as many students as possible. This is an opportunity to keep us all – students, families and staff – safe by keeping Covid out of the school
  • The rapid test is carried out by swabbing the throat and nose. It is completely painless and does not require any medical training to carry it out
  • We will be carrying out three rapid tests of students in school. Then students will be given test kits so that they can swab themselves twice a week at home
  • We want all our students to have a rapid test before they return to school. For students in years 7-11, this will require parental consent. This can be given by clicking here and filling in a simple form with some basic information. The deadline for this is 3pm Wednesday 3rd March
  • Please DO NOT consent to your child having a rapid test if they have tested positive for Covid in the past 90 days
  • Students in sixth form can give consent themselves because they are older, so no parental consent is required
  • Please see below the time your child needs to come in to take their rapid test. They must be on time. Parents and carers will not be allowed to come onto site. Note that we are directed by government to prioritise testing for years 10-13
  • Students do not need to wear uniform when they come into school for their rapid test. They must be in full school uniform when they return to school for face to face teaching
