Place2Be Consent Changes - What Parents Need to Know

What’s changing?

From February 2026, young people aged 12+ who demonstrate sufficient maturity can consent to Place2Be counselling themselves. This update ensures full alignment with existing UK law, particularly the principles established through Gillick competence, which guides how young people under 16 can consent to certain forms of health treatment if they are assessed as capable of understanding the nature, purpose, and implications of that treatment.

Will I still be involved in my child’s support?

Yes! Parent and carer involvement remains extremely important. Place2Be practitioners will actively seek your involvement and input throughout the assessment and support process. This includes gathering background information, discussing your child’s progress, and working together on their wellbeing.

What if my child doesn’t want me involved?

If a young person chooses not to involve parents initially, Place2Be counsellors will explore this sensitively and continue to encourage family involvement. Many young people do involve their parents once they’ve started engaging with support.

Will I be told if there’s a safeguarding concern?

Absolutely. If any safeguarding concerns arise, parents will always be contacted immediately. This overrides confidentiality and is unchanged from current practice.

Why make this change?

Research shows some young people delay seeking help when parental consent is required first. This change removes that barrier while maintaining our commitment to family involvement.

Who can I contact with questions?

Please contact your child’s Head of the Year who can clarify any questions. You can also contact Place2Be Area Manager to ask any questions or seek more clarifications regarding the consent changes.

Medical tracker logoWe have recently introduced a new  piece of online software to improve the first aid and health provision at George Green's School.

This software has been funded by NHS and is now being used in school to track

  • first aid provided
  • medicine administered
  • medicine expiry dates and
  • the overall health and wellness of our students.

The NHS are able to access our school medical tracker to ensure that they have the most up to date information about our students' heath needs.

If you have any questions about Medical Tracker please contact Ms Hoare via email at lhoare@georgegreens.com
