Art and Design
We see our students as naturally gifted and foster a dynamic environment for them to practice, experiment and explore
In the Art Department, we see Art as an empowering force for young people, helping them to explore their own identity and value. Our aim is to support and encourage students to engage and participate in Art & Design and develop their skills to do so with confidence. We think that Art forms an essential part of secondary education that is both intellectually stimulating and creatively fulfilling.
The GCSE and A Level are both recognised by employers and universities as excellent training in a broad range of skills, such as creative thinking and the ability to develop, refine and present ideas. Our global economy needs a workforce that is knowledgeable, creative and innovative.

Key Stage 4 Art and Design
Exam Board: AQA
What you will study
Our GCSE syllabus fully prepares students for A level or Vocational study in Art and Design and beyond. At GCSE, students will work on a series of practical projects that look to build upon the subject knowledge gained at KS3. At KS4, students will cover a breadth of core technical skills and knowledge in a range of media and areas of making, such as painting and drawing, printmaking, ceramics, photography, illustration, collage, mixed media & Installation. Students will explore the work of artists, visit Museums, such as the Tate, which is very near us and engage with art interpretation and criticism. Students learn:

- record their ideas, observations, insights and independent judgements, visually and through written annotation, using appropriate specialist vocabulary, as work progresses
- refine their ideas as work progresses through experimenting with media, materials, techniques and processes
- realise personal intentions through sustained application of the creative process.
- apply their understanding of relevant practices in the creative and cultural industries to their work
Key Stage 5 Art and Design
Exam Board: AQA
What you will study
Art and design A-level builds on the skills, knowledge and understanding developed through study at GCSE. At the end of the A-level course, students have the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for higher education or a vocational career. A-level Art is a practical course in which students have opportunities to create imaginative personal work. Students develop a Personal Investigation, supported by written material. Students are required to conduct a practical investigation, into an idea, issue, concept or theme, supported by written material. The focus of the investigation must be identified independently by the student and must lead to a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes.
Students learn:
- to record experiences and observations, in a variety of ways using drawing or other appropriate visual forms;
- undertake research; and gather, select and organise visual and other appropriate information
- explore relevant resources; analyse, discuss and evaluate images, objects and artefacts; and make and record independent judgements
- organise, select and communicate ideas, solutions and responses, and present them in a range of visual, tactile and/or sensory forms
Curriculum Map
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
As students progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
